Origin:
This expression was coined after Romans observed that ostriches put their heads on the ground. People erroneously thought that they were hiding, while in fact they do it to roll the eggs they lay on the ground to avoid them being cooked by the extremely hot weather in Africa or to hear the vibrations on the ground made by predators when they come for them.
