Origin:

This 2000-year-old expression comes from the Bible. Those who liked to observed birds noticed that birds with the same kind of feathers (birds of the same species) were always together in flocks (groups of animals) not only in the air but also on the ground. This meaning has been broaden to comparing birds with people and feathers with their traits.
